GENERAL NOTES.
"FATS” LATE.
Much speculation has obtained within the last few weeks among prominent farmers and comercial men immediately interested in the wool and meat export business with, regard to the posibilities of the coming season. Taranaki and Wanganui has unquestionably suffered as a result of the hard winter. Many farmers north of Wanganui as well as south arc one m the opinion that the passing winter has materially affected the value of the stock particularly lambs and export mutton. The winter, it is agreed, has robbed fodder of its substantial qualities of nutriment and has in consejqucnce impoverished the season’s quality in market value. ‘‘Never before in all my experience,” remarked a prominent buyer to a reporter, “have I seen lambs in such poor condition. It is shocking and distressing. I have been buying in the Wanganui and Taranaki districts for ;tho past twenty years, but never in all that time have I had cause to adopt iso pessimistic ■ an atitude toward the possibilities of a season in these districts as that which I am compelled to . adopt at the present time. Any farmer Between Bonny Glen and New Ply:mouth will tell you that the weight of his export article has declined to such a degree as to rob him of any enthusiasm in the coming season. The quality of feed has been so poor, so lacking in nourishment and fattening properties that fats arc a seeming impossibility within the accustomed period.
