A STRANGE FATALITY.
CHILD KILLED BY GATE. TRAGEDY AT MANGALA lIJ. (Special to “Press”) HASTINGS, This day. A peculiar accident, resulting' in the, death of an infant daughter of Mr Jens Noorgara Sorenson, of Mangatahi, near Marackakaho, occurred at about 11 a.m. yesterday morning. The little girl, with her sister Mar garet, who was only eighteen months older than herself, had gone with her father for a .drive in a motor car to Olrig station and returned biome at about 11 a.m. The two children went across the paddocks in the direction ot the homestead and after they had been .gone a few minutes the elder child came running back to her father, who - had. remained behind on the- roadside , attending to some machinery, and said that 'her sister Joyce was stuck under the gate and was asleep. The father evidently did not suspect that anytjijiig serious had happened and sent an employee to investigate., and a few moments later the employee camo back with the chid in his arms. Mr Sorensen took his little daughter with all haste to Royston Hospital, Hastings, where Doctor Roberts Mainlined her and could only pronounce life extinct. It was stated by the employee men ’tinned that he had found the child lying on her side with the gate on top of and completely covering her. It is supposed that* the children must have been swinging on the gate and that the extra weight broke the strainer-post to which the gate was attached. Weight is lent to this theory by the fact that the post was found to be Totten at the bottom. The gate- had seldom '■ been used, and for that reason its condition had escaped attention, but to all outward appearances was in good condition when seen by Mr Sorenson previous to th? accident yesterday morning. An inquest will be held at the Hastings Courthouse at 10.15 this morning,
