The Carterton police are investigating what appears to he an attempt to derail a trait). On Thursday night at 7 o’clock the tip poods train collided with some slip mils placed on tho catt ! e stops at Matarawa crossing and pulled up a portion of the rail, which was found obtruding from the cowcatcher. The driver of the down train states he passed over an obstruction at the same spot. It is probably the work of hoodlums.

The principal topic of conversation at present is “petroleum.” No pumping was done to-day. The manager is endeavouring to concentrate the pressure, which at present is the greatest in the outer casing in tho pipe in which the pump works, thereby hoping that any obstructions remaining in t le pipe will b- blown one. The pipes hive occasionally to be lapped to let off the pressure which forces pure petroleum out at the rate of a barrel pier minute. Pumping commences in earnest on Monday. Shaves are selling tc-d iy at JIL-J, and ■sellers arc scarce.

A mm named Thornton employed as a clcik in the railway goods shed was killed this afternoon through being run over by some trucks during shunting opentims. At the inquesy a verdict of ‘‘ accidental death ” was returned.
