Cycling Notes.
The Sydney Carnival was advanced another stage on the evening of the 16th inst. when some 15,000 spectators watched some splendid riding by the visiting champions, Ivor Lawson - and Major Taylor. Very fast time was established in several events—New world’s competition time being recorded. The racing opened with the Adelaide handicap of half a mile—the final of which was won by Lawson, with Goodson and Gordon filling the places. Time 54 3-ssecs., world’s record. The Half Mile International Test Race, which was ordered to be ridden in the last meeting, reduced itself to a match between Taylor and Walker, as Lawson and MaeFarland decided to retire from the final, which MacParland won on the first occasion. A pacer was provided trailing his wheel; half a lap from home Taylor sprinted. At the turn into the straight the Bunlop crack tackled Taylor, and gradually overhauling the “Flying Darkie,” dead-heated with him on the finishing line. Bon Walker rode a magnificent race and was warmly cheered. In the Four Miles International Test Race, there were 18 starters, but the Yankees filled the first four positions. Taylor had the assistance of Gudgeon and Mcßonald, but they were outclassed by MacFarland and Bowning who paced Lawson to victory in a very exciting finish. Taylor ran second with Bowning third and MacFarland fourth. Time Smins. 26 2-ssecs. Taylor showed that he is again in “good nick ” by winning bis heat in the Summer Wheel Race in the World's record time of Imin. 53 8-ssecs. for the mile. Lawson also won his beat in the same event.
