In Turkestan. on the right bank of the Amou Daria, in a chain of rocky hills near the Bokharan town of Kaikl. are a number of largo eaves, which, upon examination, were found to lead to an underground city, existing apparently two centuries before Christ. The high degree of civilisation attained by the inhabitants of the city is shown by the fact that they built in several storeys, by the symmetry of the streets and squares, and by the beauty of the baked clay and metal utensils, and of the ornaments and coins which have been found. It is supposed that long centuries ago this city so carefully concealed in the bowels of the earth provided an entire population with a refuge from the incursions of nomadic savages and robbers.

Preaching in the Upper Brook Street Free Church at Manchester, Mr Ben Tillett said : “ The kind of education that was needed by the general body of tho people was not specialist education, but a full development of the many sides of luunnn nature. Our people were too much educated in special ways and for special purposes. What was wanted was broad, general education, which would bring out, the full man. And in particular was Ibis needed for the workman. At present live out of every twenty workers wore ignorant, ten had a very insufficient education, and the other live of the twenty had very little to boast of. It was a fatal mistake for the education of the workman to stop with a knowledge of how to bundle bis tools.

SAND I. & SDNS EUCALYI’TiEXTHACT. —I’iiili r th i■ islinguish patronage of bis Majesty the Kin? o' Italy, a per communication inaile by the Minister for Foreign Affaire, through the Consul-General for Italy at Melbourne, 14th March, 1878. Awarded Diploma at the Amsterdam Exhibition. 1883. Acknowledged by Medical Clinics anil Universities all over the globe.

There are imitations of Eucalypti Extract in the market, products of simple distillation, forming crude resinous oils. In order that these crude oils may not be taken for our Pure Volatile Eucalypti Extract, which recognised by the medical division ol the Prussian Government to be of perfectly pure origin, as in infatuation forwarded to ns through t Consul at Melbourne, 2nd March, 1879, we state;—

It is proved by tests made by the Medi-cal Clinics of the Universiiies at Bonn and Greifswald (Prussia), and reported by Dr Shulz, Professor of Pharmacology at Bonn, nnd Professor Dr Mosler, Directory of the Medical Clinic at Greifswald, that only products that are saturated with oxygen and freed of acids, resinous and ether sub tnnccs, adherent to primary distillation, will developo the senative ipmhties proper to the plain. All crude oils, or so-called Eucalypti Extracts are to be classed according to tho named authorities among the turpiuetincs which are of insignificant medicinal value and abandoned long since ns an internal medicnlment. The, crude oils, or so-called Eucalypti Extracts, arc dcscernible — 1. By their deficiency in pungent odor (which our product, the only genuine Eucalypti Extract, develops most freely through its surplus of oxygen). 2. By their a'coholic, thin and mobile appearance being reduced in specific density through the presence of acids. 3. By their taste, the result of the contracting tendency of resins and tenant. Ifthese crude oil's, ot so-called Eucalypti Extracts, are applied by mistake in cases of croup, bronchitis, diphtheria, internal inflammations, dysentry, &c, tho consequences arc must appalling. For safety sake ask always for Sander and Sons’ Eucalypti Extract. Sandhurst, Victoria. Australia—SANDEß & SONS.
