A SUCCESSFUL BUTTER FACTORY.
In those clays of general depression a dividend of II per cent, on capital invested in an agricultural industry is something to boast of without any show of conceit, says the Leader. This is what has been actually achieved by the Koroit Butter Factory during the past year, and it may be questioned if any other legitimate business in the colony can produce a balance sheet of equal prosperity,. The company referred to, it is true, has declared a dividend of only 10 per cent., but the profits, it must be understood, have been absorbed in clearing off the first cost of establishment, including new machinery, and in awarding the directors and manager a handsome bonus. In future, when the expenses are not so heavy, the shareholders may calculate on receiving the full benefit of the profits earned, and. even though the annual dividend should bo no more than half of the present returns, there is much to encourage the extension of the dairying industry from whatever point of view we compare results, it is of course a very easy matter to inflate the balance sheet of a dairy factory by paying the farmers a low price for the milk they supply, but that charge cannot be brought against the Koroit company, as the price paid for milk at this establishment has been higher on the average than is allowed by many factories throughout the colony.
