The weight of Mr Coates’s sheep ranged from 150 to ISOlbs dressed, and yet the meat is not overloaded with fat. We heartily congratulate Mr Coates on the result of his breeding skill aided by the limestone pastures of the Kaipara district.” Litigation is pending between the Manawatu Railway Company and the Government regarding the Hotowhenua block. Under the terms of the Act the Government were to complete the company’s endowment out of any lands which the Government might, within five years, acquire from the native owners, within a certain radius, unless the Governor should be of opinion that such land was required for some public purpose. Within the period named the Government at least partly arranged with Major Kemp for the purchase of the Horowheuua Block, and some of the money was paid to him on account. The company claim, therefore, that this land, to the value of £25,000, should have been given to them as it was not required for any public purpose. The Government, however, cone tend that the actual terras of purchase were not arranged with Major Kemp until after the five years had expired, and therefore the company had no claim to be considered. Proceedings under the Crown Suits Act are now being taken by the company, through their solicitor, Mr Trav :s, to determine the actual date at which the Government legally acquired the land. —Post.
A report of the inspections made by the Crown Lands Ranger between Ist September, 1887, and the 31st December last was laid before the Land Board this morning. Mr Mackay stated that during the period mentioned he had inspected 367 sections, the total area being 89,556 acres, 13,789 of which had been brought into cultivation at a cost of £44,422. Permanent improvements valued at ,£19,398 had been made by the settlers, bringing the total expenditure up to £63,029. The area which the settlers were required to cultivate was 5882 acres, so that they had brought 7907 acres more into cultivation than they were required to do in order to satisfy the Board. Ninety-seven selectors, however, had not complied with the Act, their total deficiency amounting to 1124 acres. The Ranger pointed out that most of the defaulters were in special settlement blocks, and ho expressed the opinion that the deficiency was due to certain speculators having delayed work so as to get the advantage of any inciease in value that might take place. The cost of the inspections was £197 10s. The Board decided to compel the selectors in arrear to comply with the Act, except in those cases where satisfactory reasons could be given. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Mackay for his report. Post.
