Sib, —I shall be obliged if you will allow me through your columns to give an unqualified denial to Mr Stout’s statement that Capt. Bussell’s motion being carried was the reason that no works of construction were in progress between WoodviUo and Pahiatua. The Public Works Statement was in the hands of members long before Capt. Bussell’s motion was tabled, and it was well known to those members interested that the small sum proposed for the WellingtonWoodville lino was required to complete the permanent way to Dreyorton at the Masterton end of the railway. Ido not for a moment accuse Mr Stout of wilfully making a false statement, but it is quite evident that he on this occasion has not understood the position of the Public Works Department. I did not wish to contradict Mr Stout when at Pahiatua—he was then our visitor, but I told you at the time that if publicity wore given to such a statement that I should contradict it.—l am, &c., George Beetham. Masterton, December 9, 1885.
