The steamer Taranaki, Captain Wheeler, arrived in harbor yesterday at G p.m. She left Porfc Chalmers on Monday last, afc 2.15 p.m., and arrived at Lyttelton next day, at 11 a.m. 5 left again same day, afc 6 p.m., arriving here as above. Experienced a very heavy N.W. galo from Ljttelton to Wellington. We are indebted to Mr Bowden, purser, for files. The s.s. Wellington was appointed to leave Manukau yesterday for Southern ports, and will be due here on tho lGih instant She will sail for Lyttelton and Otago tho following day. The s.s. Phcebe, Captain Worsp, with the English mail via San Francisco, left Lyttelton yesterday, at noon, and will be due afc Porfc Chalmers early this morning. Yesterday afternoon, Mr Sawyer, signalman at Beacon Hill, rodo into town to inform the authorities that a schooner was anchored off the old pilot station wifch a signal of distress flying. Ho described her as a schooner of aboufc seventy tons, with hor topsides painted white. From the description ifc is supposed to bo the Huon Belle. In a letter to the " Lyttelton Times," Capt Paddle, of the ship Monarch, at present in Hobson's Bay, makes a complaint, in the following terms, of the port charges at Lyttelton. A portion of the letter says: — "I coneider the charges are enormous for the accommodation they receive. The following were mado against the Monarch, and paid when Bhe entered inwards afc fche Custom House * — Pilotage, in and out, £56 9s -id ; lighfc dues, £36 2s ; port dues, £12 Os 8d ; two removals, £12 Os 8d; total, £116. 12s Bd. Wo had a fair wind oufc, and 1 suppose tho pilot was on board two and a-half hours, and conducted tho ship aboufc four miles from heu anchorage, for which the enormous charge of £28 4s Brl was levied. Inwards, the wind being lighfc, the ship was towed in by the Gazelle. The same charge was made. In London, Calcutta, and I belicvo in most parts of tbe world; if a ship is towed by steam any part, one-third pilotage is always deducted ; not the ease in Lyttelton. The master is also liable to a penalty if he moves his ship only a few lengths. The charge of £6 03 4d was made against us in fcwo instances, although .lie was towed astern by steamer." After recommending the merchants of tho porfc to bring tho matter before the Chamber of Commerce, tho Captain further complains of tho want of fresh water in the porfc, of the want of wool-pressing accommodation, and of the want of courtesy iv extending to captains of vessols free permits on fche railway, a privilege accorded to nil captains of vessels arriving in Melbourne, in which port the ship is afc present lying.
