NEW YORK MARKETS.
The New York special correspondent to the " News of the World," in a letter dated Oct. Ist-, gives the following report of the export market for Australia and New Zealand :— • During the period under review, the freighting business to Australian ports has been unusually quiet, and, excepting the shipments of kerosene, thsro is very little to note. The last mails brought very few orders, and they hare been filled, thus leaving the market in rather a stagnant condition. Rates for freight are much firmer, and have advanced in sympathy with the general firmnesß in other directions, aa we.l as tho extreme scarcity of vessels. I quote : to Melbourne, 27a at 30c per foot ; to* New Zealand ports, 32£ at 35c ; to Adelaide and Sydney the rates are nominal, no freight being offered. The great demand for vessels for the European trade, with bread^tuffa, produce, petroleum, cotton, &c, has caused a great dearth of tonnage at this and neighboring ports, and owners are demanding almost unheard-of ; prices for their vessels. Almost every vessel arriving has either been chartered outright, or committed, and it is impossible to obtain suitable vessels for long voyages. Since my last report the ship Rattler, 909 tons, ha 3 been chartered for Oammeron's line, and the new bark Etta Loring, 719 tons, for Peabody's line from Boston. During the month the bark Nehemiah Gibson has sailed from here for Melbourne and Adelaide, and the bark Polly Lewis, from Boston for Melbourne and Dunedin. The former's cargo embraces 16,450 cases kerosene, including 6,950 cases for Adelaide, I.OCO boxes maizena, 387 packages tobacco, 49 oases oysters, 200 cases bitters, 79,036 feet clear and 9,105 feet ceiling lumber, 700 bundles lath and 222 packages sundries The Polly Lewis's cargo for Melbourne embraces 1.750 cases kerosene, 121 packages tobacco, 238 cases lobsters, 250 do oysters, 500 kits mackerel, j I 200 barrels plaster, 200 cases bitters, 27,199 ] feet lumber, and a largo assortment of general freight; for Dunedin, her cargo includes 500 cases kerosene, 107 packages tobacco, 200 cases rubber boots, and 22,570 feet clear pine lumber, besides other freight. The veßselß loading at this port are ship Battler and bark Adelia Carleton, both for Melbourne, and to sail about the 25th instant, and the bark Jewess, for Dunedin, to sail on the 12th instant. The latter'a cargo will include 2,350 to 2,850 cases kerosene, 60 barrels pork, 270 cases rubber boots, 100 cases handles, and 100,000 feet lumber, also general merchandise.
