WELLINGTON RIFLE MATCH.
* . COMPETITION EOB CAPTAIN PEAECB B CHALLENGE CUP. There was yesterday a numerous gathering of the best shots among the Volunteers at the Adelaide butts, their object being to compete for the challenge cup presented by Captain Pearco, and for other twenty prizes which, through the liberality of other citizens, the Match Committee had been able to procure. Though the day was bright and clear, it was not a favorable one for rifle practice, on account ot the high wind which prevailed. The firing was consequently, as a whole, inferior to that achieved at laafc year's match, when the cup was won by Volunteer David Q-ray by a score of 76 points. The following was the list of prizes : — Ist prize — Captain Pearoe'a cup and dSS. 2nd— Field glass (presented by Joseph and Co) and £3. 3rd — Silver cup (Shaw and Son) and £2 4th — Lady's walnut work box (Mr S. The firing coinmenoed afc half-past ten, at the 200 yard range, position standing. The effect of the streng wind was shown in the lowness of the scores, the highest ecoro made being 18, by J. Gray, W.R.V. ; the highest score at last competition being 22. At the next range, 400 yards kneeling, there was a great improvement in the firing, McCredie making 24 points, whioh would have been a very good score in the best of weather. McTavish and Halse made 22 points each, placing them at the head of the list with a tie of 36 ; McCredie coming next with 35. The firing ceased for half an hour at the conclusion of this range to allow the competitors and markers to partake of an excellent lunoh provided by the match committee. The kindness of Mr R. J. Duncan was now appreciated by the thirsty competitors, in drinking the excellent ale presented by him to the Committee. At 2 p.m. firing was resumed at the 500yards range, position any. MoTavish took the lead here, leaving Halse and McCredie ties, five points behind. The scores now stood — McTavisb, 51 ; McOredie and Halse, 46. At the 600 yards range, McOredie crept gradually up on McTavish, until the latter made a miss to MoCredie's bull's-eye, thus plaoing McCredie four points ahead. Mason was now coming close up, but waa too late to gain upon MoCredie and MoTavish, With the remaining shots, MoCredie came in first with a score of 64, MoTavish second 62, and Mason third 60. Halse fell behind at this, range, on account of being under the disadvantago of firing on a high scaffolding, whioh exposed him muoh more to the force of the wind. He came in seventh with a score of 53. The conclusion of the firing was not ao close or exoiting as at the last competition. The highest score, 64, was 12 points behind the highest score at the last competition, but was quite as good, taking into consideration the state of the weather.
