A USEFUL OBJECT OBSTRUCTED.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE INDEPENDENT.
Sib, — Thoro is a general regret felt at the action taken by three of our oitizens in the Upper House, viz., Messrs Rhodes, Pharnzyn, and Mantoll. The last-named gentleman has no doubt done it, as the monkey did, out of pure mischief ; the two former for reasons known to themselves, but better known to aomo of the public. What have these three "Lords" done — they have obstructed the ereotion of a useful building which it was intended to erect upon the reclaimed land and under one roof ; it waa intended by our Superintendent that tho Land office, Registrar's office, Land Transfer office, the Provincial Library, Provincial offices and Council Chamber should all be in the same building. At present tho-incovenienoo to the publio is very great — the Land office is on Thorndou
Flat; .Superintendent's offices in Kumatoto street 5 Provincial Library and Treasury at Mr Brandon's old office ; the Registrar's and Land Transfer offices in the old wooden building (a- perfect match-box), originally known as Barrett's Hotel. Had it not been for the obstructiveneßS of those " Lords," this useful and • substantial public benefit would have been carried out. It is to be hoped that it is not yet too late to remedy the mischief intended. It is high time that -the -Upper House (Lords) should be made elective. — I am, &c, Progbess.
