GENERAL SUMMARY.
The loss of the troop ship Megwra, following the previous naval disasters, excites loud outcries against the Admiralty. The First Lord of the Admiralty gavo a detailed history of the case, and asked for a suspension of judgment till the affair had been thorougly investigated. He believed that abuses proceed from the obscmctiveness of the permanent officials. The emigration to the Australasian i co'onies last year amounted to over ' 17,000 persons. It is rumored that Arthur Orton is imprisoned in Australia, and that trustworthy information has been received respecting the crew of the Bella. Nothing further has transpired respecting the transportation of Communist prisoners to New Caledonia. A company of American speculators offers to settle them in Mexico. The proposal will be submitted to the French Assembly. The steamers Hibernian and Edinburgh have sailed with the British Australian cable. The consignees intend to contest the legality of the sale of the wreck and cargo of the Queen of the Thames. The Government Ballot Bill embodies the plan adopted in New South Wales. The Iron Cross is conferred on Dr. Russell, of the " Times," by the German Emperor, The Star of St. Stanislaus is bestowed on Mr Reed, late chief constructor of the navy, by the Czar. A site is chosen on the Thames embankment for a statue to the late Lord Derby. The Wimbledon rifle meeting this year was brilliantly successful. The weather was favorable. The shooting was good, and the attendance was unusually large. Several Royal personages
were amongst the visitors- The Albert Cup was won by Sergt. Feiguson, of la verness. The Canadian Cup was wo» by Captain M'Glenaghan, of Ontario. The Elcho Shield was won by England,. Ireland being second. The internationalchallenge trophy was taken by Ensign Gray, of Ayrshire. On July 23, a review of 12,000 volunteers and regulars was held, and the prizes were distributed by Princess Louiseaccompanied by Prince Arthur and theMarquis of Lorn. The Amateur Sculling Championship' was won by Fawcus, of the TynemouthBoat Club, against Delong, of the London Rowing Club, by half a length. The Cyclops, a double turret ship, hasbeen launched at Blackwall. The engineers' strike at Newcastle and Gateshead continues. Ten thousand colliers in South Wales are still on strike. Head constable Talbot has died -of^*^ wound inflicted by a Fenian assassin. Hannah Newington is sentenced toeight years' penal servitude for the manslaughter of Mr Moon. The acquittal of Edmund Pook, of Blackheath, who was charged with the Eltham murder, was followed by scandalous behavior of a mob at Greenwich,, sod his parents were obliged to appeal for protection to the police. The trial of Agnes Norman, for attempted strangulaiion of an infanf, 13 deferred. Another baby farmer, Frances Rogers* was sentenced at Manchester assizes to twenty years' penal servitude. A fresh seizure of Fenian arms has been lately made at Liverpool. Corporal punishment is abolished in the navy.
