In view of the largo areas in want of cultivation in our colonies, it may be questioned whether there is any Sympathy for those who favor our poor-law system. As an insttmce of the large amounts expended in this way, we may mention that a pauper belonging to the parish of Errol lias recently died at an advanced age in a lunatic asylum. He was boarded in the Dundee, Montrose, Perth, and Murthly Asylums, and has cost his parish £1150, he having been located in these asylums for the long period of forty eight years, He survived all his relations. The Northern Fish cries have yielded very handsome returns of late. Trade on the Clyde and in the manufacturing districts is improving. The meeting of the Glasgow Agricultural Soeieiy, which is announced to lake place very shortly, is expected to be a great success. There is this yea) 1 a large excess of entries in every department, evidencing that these shows are a means to incentive among stockbreeders, agriculturists, implement milkers, and others. A man named John Macartney was sentenced at the Glasgow Spring Circuit Court to twenty years' penal servitude for causing the death of his wife. Mr Holme's new patent storm and danger signal light has. been exhibited in Glasgow with complete success. It is self-igniting, and cannot be extinguished either by wind or water. I)r Guthrie is expected to visit the United States during the coming uuturn. The horse-shoers of Edinburgh and Leith threaten a striko in October next, unless an increase of their wages be granted. They gi;'e timely notice of their intention, at any
rate. The Earl of Stair has been appointed Her Majesty's High Commissioner to the General Assembly of Scotland. Her Majesty the Queen arrived at Balmoral on May 17, where she will reside for about a month. The directors of Leith Hospital have declined to convert their institution into a medical and surgical hospital for the clinical instruction of the ladies. The Reformed Presbyterian Synod has adopted the motion for the re- appointment of their committee to consider, along with the committees of other churches, any further steps by which the movement towards union may be prudently advanced.
