«, TO THE EDITOB OF THE INDEPENDENT. Sir,— l have just found some statistics applicable to Romish education, taken from Ritualist, the Highways to Rome, by Dr. Cumming. Lecture X., page 29. — In London illegitimate births are 4 2 per cent. ; in Paris, 48 4 per cent. ; in Brussels, 531 ; in Munich, 980 ; in Vienna, 1162 ; aud in Rome, 260. l< Statistics of Murders, — In Belgium the average murders a-year are 84, or 193 in a million ; in Iroland they are 130, or 19-8 in a million j in France 1089, or 807 in a million ; in Austria, 1325, or 363 in a miltton ; in Bavaria, 311, or 68*3 in a tnillion ; in Spain, they ure 250 in a million ; in the Papal States, 339, or 1131 in a million ; in Euglund and Wales, 47 in a million." From lecture X.— " Mr Lumloy, an able statist in London, states it aB the result of an investigation in London, of the whole of the prisons in England, thatthroughoutthem alltbe Roman Catholic prisoners are 25 per cent, of the whole. The Roman Catholic population in England is nearly two millions. The whole population of England must be nearly twenty millions. According to this ratio, the Roman Catholic population ought to contribute about one-tenth only of the prisoners ; but instead of that one-fourth of the prisoners are Roman Catholic" From page 6. — " The population of Antrim, a Protestant county, is 247,000.
