Well informed people allege Whitiora to ha v e stated that storekeepers, laborers, sheep and cattle owners, formers, gentlemen, and ministers of religion, might remain in Waikato under Tawhiao's protection, but Government officials would have to return to England. After the meeting, he sent letters to the same effect.
