Auckland.— The " Dross" of the 11th says : — The commercial intelligence is confirmatory of the generally encouraging reports brought by the San Francisco mail. The advance made in the price ©f New Zealand flax is maintained, and various tests are being applied to determine the absolute value of the fibre as a ropemaking material, as well as to devise means for adapting it for weaving. A noticeable feature in the particulars of sales to hand is the higher prices generally realised for Auckland dressed fibre as compared with that imported from the Southern provinces. We think this is more traceable to the superior quality _of the mid flax most commonly found in this province than to any difference in the method of dressing. Inferior-dressed fibre is at a decided discount in England at present. The Xonflon market valuo for flax of good quality 18 from £29 6s to £30 ss, and for fine from £33 to £36 10s. The wool sales show a tealthy state of firmness, but no particular alteration in values. For mutton tallow there appears to be a good demand, and from 44s to 45s is quoted as the ruling price. Very little Auckland whcai haß come in. Flour is selling at from £14 to £16 per ton. THE SHARE MARKET. Nonpareils, Moanataiaris, and All Nations are in demand. Mr S. Tickers reports : — Bank of New Zealand shares are firmly held for £16. New Zealand Insurance shares are sought for at £25. In the goldmining shares the business ; has been heavy, with a general advance on most of the known interests.
