[From Greville's Telegram Company, Beuter's Agents.] Napier, Tuesday. Timothy Jones, a private in the Armed Constabulary, has been drowned at the third crossing of the Wairoa river, while endeavoring to cross in a canoe. The body was found on the 10th. An inquest is to be held. The steamer Napier is ashore at the Wairoa. The cargo has been landed, and the vessel is as yet uninjured. The Ngotiporou have returned from the Wairoa, after an unsuccessful search for Te Kooti. Blenheim:, Tuesday. At the Wai rau races to-day the Maiden Plate was won by Mr Grimstone's Azalea, Mr Redwood's Anticipation being second. The Shearer's Purse was won by Mr Maxtod's Spring ; the Wairau Plate by Mr Piedwood's Songstress, MrGrimstone's Azalea being second ; the Ladies Purse by Shepherders. Golden Eagle second, and Mr MaskelPs Dutchman third. Dunedin, Tuesday. To-day was observed as a close holiday. The Governor held a levee, which was very largely attended, He afterwards received an address from the corporation. During the day his Excelleuoy opened the flower show, and in the afternoon inspected the volunteers, complimenting them highly on their soldierly appearance. Westport, Tuesday. Arrived — Schooner Maid of Erin, from Melbourne. Christchurch, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court to-day, David Wright, for manslaughter, was acquitted. In the case of George Hall, charged with the same offence, on a separate indictment, the Crown entered a nolle prosequi, and the prisoner was discharged. 3. Abbott, for cattle stealing, received two years imprisonment with hard labor.
