A fire broke out on board the clipper ship City of Auckland, at one o'clock this morning. Charles Hudson, the carpenter, was awoke by a crackling noise, and discovered the lire in the fore-hold. He Rave the alarm to the fire brigade. The police, with the crews of the adjacent vessels, assisted in getting the ship removed into tho harbor ; but all efforts to extinguish the fire were fruitless. She was then scuttled in four fathoms of water. The fire is now extinguished, and the vessel lies in water up to the deck. The ship is considerably injured forward by the fire, besides scuttle holes all round The fire originated amongst the tow, three hundred tons of which had been shipped on the previous day. The remainder of the cargo was wool, flax, gum, oil, and tallow. The ship was nearly full, and was to sail in February with forty passengers. She cost £20,000. The captain does not believe the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion. The general impression is that it was the resjlt of incendiarism. Brown, Campbell & Co, Henderson & Macfai-lane, Cruickshank, Smart & Co, and Walker, are the principal losers. The cargo was mostly insured, but the vessel was uninsured. Departure — Hero.
