Redwood — Blenheim, 49 ; Renwick, 9 ; Wairau Valley, 5. Total — Eyes, 201 ; Redwood, 03. Nelson, "Wednesday. At the nomination of candidates for the city to-day there were proposed Curtis, Shephard, J. C. Richmond, Lightband, and M'Gregor. The latter has withdrawn. The show of hands was in favor of Curtis and Lightbandr The meeting lasted three and a half hours. Attendance reduced to a small number before the close. Lightband was not present, and was brought forward without his knowledge. Shephard read telegrams which had passed between Luckie and Featherston concerning rumored statement made by the latter in Nelson, that he had obtained for the Government an offer of £450,000 at 3£ per cent, which the Government did net accept, because the banks would have got no commission. Featherston admits the story so far as the offer of money and refusal, but denies that this was from any consideration for the Banks, but because the Government did not want money. Dunedin, Wednesday. Cavershara election — Mr Cantrell, 166 ; Mr M'lndoe, 107. Hokitjka, Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Dillon Bell arrived per mail. They will leave by the Tararua. Fresh candidates for the election are still coming forward. A meeting of the "protection league was fully attended. Protection will form a prominent subject in future programmes. It is rumored that the Ministry intend to revise the tariff. Mr Jones threatens, if re-elected, to exclude reporters from the Assembly, unless' they report him. A severe storm partiallydestroyed Lady Island, and the light is now eighteen feet below its former height. A Fiji letter states states that Rewa chief has thrown off allegiance to Thakombou, and a native war considered certain, A deficit in the year's revenue of eighty-six thousand. The Government intend to proceed with harbor defence according to plans originally adopted, notwithstandidg the peaceful nature of the war. ■ Holders of breadstuff's are more anxious to sell since the mail news was received. Wool sales yesterday firmer. Mary Edith from Manila, brings six hundred and twenty tons of sugar. Arrived — Wonga Wonga, from Adelaide. Cutter Secret leaves shortly for port Darwin to trade between there and Timor. Commercial news by mail considered satisfactory. Shipments of corn are likely to continue. The prices, however, are likely to fall. The Governor's despatches stato all fears of further complications are allayed. The Agent-General reports that negotiations with telegraph company with reference to Port Darwin lino are most satisfactory. Wheat in some districts varies in value, from 4s to 4s 6d a bushel. Sales good wheat, 4s 7d. Hobarton. Commercial Bank, £100 shares when sold by auction fetched £154. Handiman's Land Bank, £50 shares at £76 12s. The Janet Holt's sugar sold from £38 to £48. Mount Wellington was covered with snow yesterday.
