CANTERBURY.

ABBIYAL OF LOBD LYTTEITON.

Lord Lyttelton, the hon. S. Lyttelton, and Mr Selfe arrived at Lyttelton between nine and ten o'clock on Sunday evening. The following particulars of their reception are from the Lyttelton Times : — They were received by his Honor the Superintendent, who, on being informed by telegram of their departure from Wellington had gone into port to meet them, and were conveyed by special train to Christchurch. A committee, convened by the Provincial Government, met at the Council library yesterday for the purpose of arranging the preliminaries for a public breakfast and also a public ball in honor of our distinguished visitors. It was resolved that a time suited to their convenience should be selected early in the ensuing month, and that the entertainments should be given in the Volunteer drill-shed, which is to be floored with boarding and otherwise fitted to accommodato on each occasion at least 1000 persons. A large committee, with power to add to their number, was appointed, with, full authority to carry out the arrangements. With regard to the breakfast proposed to be given to Lord Lytfcelton and Mr Selfe by the settlers who came out in the first four ships, we understand that Dr Barker and Mr Wilson have waited on these gentlemen and ascertained.that they will be happy to accept the invitation to breakfast in the Town Hall, on Wednesday, the sth of February. The hour will be eleven a.m. A ball will take place on the ensuing Friday. We hear that Lord Lyttelton and Mr Selfe intend to visit Westlaud at an early date.
