DUKE OF EDINBUEGH.
From information received at Otago from Sir George aud the Colonial Secretary, it seems that his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh has promised to visit Otago and witness the Caledonian. Games. He has expressed a willingness to open the Christchurch tunnel. I THE WBECK OF THE GENEBAL GEANT. In reply to a recommendation from the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce that a steamer should be at once despatched to the Auckland Islands for the purpose of ascertaining whether any others of the crew of the General Grant are alive, the following telegram was received from the Colonial Secretary : — " All inquiries made lead to the belief that all the people in the General Grant were drowned, except those reported as saved. They were seen to go down. The mate and three men who left Auckland Islands in boat, may possibly, but not probably, have drifted to Campbell Island. The Amherst is about to search the latter first, and then the Auckland Islands. The Government will next session propose a vote for a depot, &c, at Auckland Islands. — E. W. Stafford." camebon and the otago daily times. In the Supreme Court, on the 24th, Mr Macassey moved for a rule absolute in the above case. On the 29th. November, Mr Macussey obtained a rule nisi against the defendants, and Duniell Campbell, printer of the Times and Witness, to ansvrer an affidavit by Mr G. K. Turton. Tho rule was now made absolute. The , birthday of the poet Burns was celebrated, with dv« honor in Ocago. The Otago Daily Times understands that it has been, definitely decided to select the Waiwera River for the location of the first experiment in salmon breeding. Mr N. C. Hitchen has played several games of billiards at Dunedin, but lias not always come off victorious. In every case, however, he has given his opponent long odds.
