THE WAIRARAPA TRAMWAY.
(to the editob of the independent.)
Sin, — I notice in youv issue of this morning that some studious gentleman has devoted a week to the task of watching the road atNgahaurangafor the purpose of estimating the probable traffic over the Grand Trunk Wellington and Wairarnpa Tramway. The result is supposed to be a strong argument in favor of the tramway. It would be decidedly interesting to your readers if thiß Bame gentleman would supply the following information : — 1. How many of the vehicles, passengers, &c. entered and left Wellington by the West Coast Road and did not go past Ngahauranga at all in the direction of the Wairarapa. 2, Tlio probable number of horsemen (I presume the weather prevonted any horsewomen being out during the week) and pedestrians that past his point of observation were merely taking a little afternoon exercise and would not bo likely to patronise the tramway even wore it in existence.
3. Tho manner in which ho estimates the tonnago of tho goods and the quantity that would pass over the Rimutuka. 4. Whether the cattle, pigs, &c. that stray about the Hutt Road, disdaining to acknowledge any owner, wore taken into tho account. The exertions of those enterprising "engineers," Messrs Smith and Clarke and the gentlemen forming tho provisional committee are perhaps worthy of all praise, but a little more definite information as to the manner in which they propose to carry out the works of the proposed tramway, and the probable time of commencement and completion would be acceptable to intending subscribers. Anojjportunity of investing money which is estimated to return 25 per cent, per annum does not often occur in such hard times as the present. — Yours, &c, K.
