CRICKET.

(to the editor of the independent.)

Sir, — The cricketing season having now fairly commenced I presume the players of Marlborough and Nelson will mutually look for a redemption of the pledge of the Wellington men to play the return interprovincial matches during the present season (bear in mind H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh with the crow of the Galatea will soon bo kero ; you will find Jack as good as his master in them) ; some steps should at once be taken in the matter. Then arises the question, who is to take the initiative ? A public meeting should, I think, be called for the expross purpose of making arrangoments for the return matches between this and the above named provinces ; also, with the object of considering the present position of cricketing in this province generally . It is no less strange than true, that while nearly every village in the mother country can boast of its cricket club that here in Wellington there should exist such lukewarmness and apathy in the matter to render a public meeting necessary whenever an important match ig about to take place, or should be played. Something should bo done ; somo stops should bo taken to obviate this and to place the matter on somo permanent basis. In tho colonies of Melbourne, Sydney, Victoria, and elsewhere cricketers' associations have been formed which work well and answer every purpose. I would suggest tho advisability of establishing a similar society here. Let a preliminary meeting be called for this purpose — appoint a committee to draft rules for the same. In order to secure a largo enrolment of members the annual subscription should not be too high, say 10s 6d ; honorary members, £1 Is. Should the society at any time require aid, do as others do, rosort to an amateur theatrical performance. Tho association once formed it cannot fail to prosper with anything like thorough cricketing management. Trusting that these suggestions will at once be acted upon, and that immediate- steps will bo taken in tho matter, I remain, yours, &c.,

Bampfylde Moore Caretv.
