MISS AVONIA JONES DEAD. GENERAL GRANT SPOKEN OF AS NEXT PRESIDENT. The P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Co's s.s. Mataura, Captain G. E. Bird, E.N.R., arrived at Wellington at 4 a in. on the 22nd Nov. The Mataura sailed from Sydney on Sept. Ist, arrived at Wellington on Sept. 6th, ■experienced strong southerly and southoast gales throughout the passage. Left Wellington on Sept Bth, arriving at Panama on October 4th. The weather on leaving New Zealand was extremely fine, accompanied with moderate head winds, which continued throughout the entire passage till within four days of arrival, when the wind gradually veered round to light S.E. and S.YV. breezes; passed Malpelo Islands on the morning •of the 3rd October. The Mataura left Panama on the morning of the 24-th October with the European mails and passengers from Southampton, which arrived at Ht Thomas by the Rhone, in the short space of twelve days, thence by the Tamar to Aspinwall arriving there on the •22nd Oct. The Mataura, from the date •of leaving Panama to the 15th Nov. had fine weather and fair winds, then experienced a succession of strong S.W. and westerly gales, at intervals blowing hard with a heavy head sea ; on the night of the 20th it blew with greater violence and heavier sea running; obliged to stop the engines for three hours on account of ship plunging and engines racing, kept away two points to avoid the sea ; towards morning of the 21st the weather moderated, at 9 a.m. made the land about Cape Turnagain and arrived as above. On the night of the 10th inst. steamed close to the Island of Opara, fired a rocket ; but it not being answered, steered off again, owing to the thick haze over the land and not wishing to lose the night. On October 30, in lat. 6.38 S., lon. 97.51 W., passed a ship running to the northward. On November 8, in lat. 2122 S., lon. 133.45 W., passed a whaling barque, cruising. She brings in all sixty-six passengers, Amongst whom are the " Compagnia Liricaltaliaua," en route for Australia. The following is her passenger list : — For Wellington — Major Paul, O. A.
