NELSON. A GOOD IDEA.

In accordance with a resolution passed bf the Provincial Council of Nelson last session, a number of its members, accompanied by the Superintendent, left Nelson on Tuesday week, in the steamer Kennedy, for the West Coast, on Tuesday last, ia order that they may make themselves acquainted with the district, and better understand ita requirements when again called upon to legislate for it.

THE COLLINGWOOD GOLDFIELD. ! The Evening Mail regrets to state thafc the party who left town on Wednesday night for the Pakawau coalfield, and who extended their excursion to Collingwood, report un- , favorably of the coalfield in that district, relative to which such bright anticipations had been formed. They state that all the sinkings on Washbournc's Flat have beea bottomed vrithout any results, and the ground is now deserted, except by Wilson and his party who are doing very well, though all the holes sunk in their immediate vicinity hare proved so unprofitable. In Appoo's Gully* Mr Nicholls and his mates went down to a depth of about sixty feet without bottoming,, but as he stated in his recent letter, the contents of which appeared in this journal, the water proved too strong for them, aud they were compelled to leave it. They therefore returned to Kelson last night in the Lady Barkly. Mr Nicholla is, however, fully of opinion that, could the difficulty presented by the influx of water into the holes be surmounted, gold would be found in payable quantities. Another party who are novr sinking on Appoo's Flat, have reached &. depth of 108 feet, without bottoming, but have just come upon pipe clay and gravel,, which is regarded as a favorable sign. A large party of miners have left and gone overland to West Wanganui, and we are informed that Collingwood itself presents anything but the appearance of a township ia. the vicinity of a flourishing goldfield.
