SYDNEY.
We reprint some late Sydney telegrams, published in the Melbourne papers :—
The steamer Telegraph, hence forßrisbane, struck on a sunken rock near Perpendicular Head, on the morning of the 10th inst, and immediately filled and went down. The passengers and crew were all saved, and have arrived here per Grafton. The Telegraph had a large and valuable cargo on board, all of which was lost. The captain and mate were both on deck when she struck, aud the sea was smooth.
Immense numbers of caterpillars are destroying the crops in the Hunter district. The business before Parliament has been. unimportant. The Federal Council Bill, the Postal Bill, and the Volunteer Bill were read a third time, and received the Royal assent.
Humplirej r B, the bushranger, and his mate, robbed Newell's Hotel, near Forbes, on the morning of the 10th instant. Sub-Inspector Roberts encountered them soon afterwards. Humphreys escaped, and the other man was shot dead.
The weather is intensely hot. During the gale on Wednesday night a hafc near Hartley caught fire, and three children were burned to death.
A rick reef has been found at the new diggingsnear Braid wood. Twenty- five ounceii of were taken, from five hundred weight of quartz.
