COMMERCIAL.

-«. Otago.— The Daily Times of the sth instant, says :— Although a brisk demand for spring supplies has not yet set in, either from our near or distant customers, and operations of any magnitudo in the import market have boon rare, scarcely any goods witnessing particular enquiry, and the majority of staples finding buyers only in limited parcels ; still, a more steady trade has been done during the last fortnight, and general business is sensibly mending. Breadstuffs of late have not commanded attention ; and as a proof of how little this market now has need of imported flours or grain, the lust intelligence of improved prices in Melbourne failed to cause any alteration here. Adelaide flour is quoted at £14 to £14 10s ; Provincial, £10 10a ; wheat, 4s ; barley, 4b 6d ; oats, 2s Bd. Malt liquors, spirits and wines may be classed as alike, no operations of note transpiring in any of these articles. Holders of ale in bulk are only able to quit by a low hogsheads at a time, and can scarcely make sales of bottled to a greater extent. The value for new brew beers keeps about as last given, there being uo sales of magnitude enough to alter prices. Hennessey's and Martell's brandies are quoted at 6s lOd to 7s, and 27s to 27s 6d. Champagne Vineyard Proprietors and Otard's, are worth 6s 6d to 6s 9d. The inquiry for low-class sherries has subsided ; and though a few packages of good and medium ports have been placed ; very low descriptions are almost unsaleuleable. Mblbottbne. — The Argus, of the 28th ultimo, . says :— In tho import markets to-day, business generally has not been active. Breadstuffs continue to maintain a very languid appearance, and no transactions of any consequence can bo effected. Quotations of country brands of Victorian flour are retained at £11 5s to £11 10s. In wheat no sales have been reported. Teas at the moment are not characterised by much animation, though half-chests still meet with favor ; a few small parcels have been quitted of medium congous at Is 7d, while fine descriptions have been disposed of to the trado at up to 2s Id. Candles are inquired for, and sales are mentioned at lid. The quantity placed by auction was very trifling, and, rather singularly, though faulty lots found buyers at 10/fd net, no higher bid could be got for sound parcel?, which had in consequence to bo withdrawn. Kerosene oil generally ie iti a most doprespfd condition, with the exception of Downer's which is inquired for ; and we leurn of some 2500 eiises, in parcels, having changed bunds at up to 2s 3d. Oriental has been quitted at 2s Id. Tho nuetion sale of oilmen's stores pivs>ed off most satisfactorily s some 2000 packages were got rid of at improved prices. Of iho muscatel rnisins about 3500 piicksiges Ibiunl l»..v«rj» at prices running from B}j to 9Jd. The V. iJ.nud Ui> genovn, offered at the same time, hud to be wilhdruwn. On the other hand, we understand tWut some 3000 cases of yellow seal, long duty, have been quitted in aline privately, on terms withheld, and holders now demand for trade parcel* us much as 14s 6d for this brand. In stout we hear of sales of Burkes having been made at 10a l£d. We understand that the bills of Messrs Thomas and Rush, millers, huvo been returned di&henored. The liabilities, secured and unsecured, are stated to be slightly over £8000.
