THE CASE OF THE WAIRARAPA CONSTABLE.

Me Hodges, who recently gave this journal some unfounded information relative to an alleged engagement between the Hauhaus and the colonial forces, has apologised for having done so, and of course the matter will now drop. Our only object in taking it up was to protect ourselves and our readers from being misled. That purpose has now been 1 served, and we trust that Mr Hodges, who, we believe, has done the colony good service during the last three years in the l fighting on the East Coast, .will not again, I through imprudence, plaoe himself in a false position. The following letter has been adl dressed to us for publication : — Wellington, 22nd July, 1867. Sic, — I beg to express my sincere regrefc thafc on Monday last I, gave you certain information relative to an alleged engagement between the Hauhaus and the Colonial Forces, which was entirely unfounded. As through my giving the unfounded information in question tho proprietor of your newspaper was put to some extra expense, and as you decline to receive any compensation, I agree, afc your suggestion, to pay the sum of £2 sterling to the Benevolent Society, in lieu thereof. Again apologising for having inadvertently made statements which were calculated if published to mislead the community. — I am, &c, H. Douglas Hodges, P.C. Henry Anderson, Esq., Editor Wellington Independent.
