Peom the " Argus," of the 31st ult. The import, markets to-day have not been characterised by much animation 5 a moderate amount of business has, however, been done, at well sustained rates. The auction sale of sugars attracted a good attendance and upwards of 5000 j bags found buyers at advance of about 25s all round on prices realised at last week's sales. nations brought 22s 9d to 34s ; browns, 35s to. 36s ; medium counters to fine sold at from 38s 3d to 41s 6d; ycilow crystals realised 41s 9d to 42s 6d ; and middling white, 445. Breadstuffs arc in good request. .Holders of Chilian flour have made n commencement with sales. A hundred tons of the Don Julio's, and some seventy to eighty tons of the Sarah Marsh's have been placed at equal to £14 10s, short terms. The Catherine Jane's cargo is said to be going into store. No actual transactions in foreign wheat havo transpired, but we understand that a parcel of 3,000 bushels Port McDonnell wheat changed hands at ■ a shade under oui 1 quotation of 7s 9d. In kerosene oil the market is chiefly in the hands of one firm, who do not offer ub present rates; but any parcels coming forward are eagerly purchased outside of them, at long rates. Upwards of 1000 cases, a colonial shipment, havo gone in a line into the hands of one buyer, at 5s 3d : besides which, we hear of several small lots of 100 to 200 cases having been disposed of at 5s 6d. Rum has taken a sudden start, the market having been completely run bare of stock. A. shipment of • about fifty hhds, in hhds, and quarter-casks, 10 par cent. • 0.p., hns been disposed of at 3s 6d ; whilst a smaller shipment to arrive realised 3b 6d for hhd, and 3s 9d for quarters, an advance of 3d to 4£d per gallon all at once. Woolpacks have attracted increase'l notice. We hear of over a hundred bales having been placed at up to 4s 6d and we do not hear of any sellers under. Dried fruits are selling freely. Sales of Crown muscatels have been sold at 9d; raisins are mentioned at 9£d ; basket muscatels and soft-shell almonds have been quitted at 9d. Trades sales of malt have been effectod at 15s. Wo hear of a shipment of Ewbank's nails having been disposed of at 12^ per cent, off list., a figure which shows a slight advance. Candles are not sought after. The few sales making, however, command Is 7d duty paid; while a lot of about 150 boxes, sold all faults, realised Is 6£d. Tho Melbourne Company has raised its price to Is 6<il. In tea, very little business is doing.
