THE WAIRARAPA ELECTION
The official returns of the polling in this election have not yet been received, but from information brought into town yesterday, it is very probable that Mr Henry Bunny has been elected, thus defeating Mr Edward Pearce.
On Saturday Mr Pearce polled 20 votes over his opponent in the City, thus reducing Mr Bunny's majority to 31, while the returns from Castle Point, Whareama, Tauanui, and Huangarua, havo yet to be received. In these districts it is anticipated that the votes havo been generally in favor of Mr Pearce, but we do
not think it probable, if the figures given above are correct, that the result will bo thereby affected. Till the official returns come to hand, it is impossible to speak with absolute certainty, but as a matter of opinion we venture to say that Mr Bunny has been the winner in the contest.
Since the above was in type we have been informed that the votes recorded at Mr P. Hume's station were 9 for Mr Pearce, and 1 for Mr Buuny. At Warehama and Castle Point it was anticipated that Mr Pearce would have a majority over Mr Bunny of some 10 votes ; which would reduce Mr Bunny's majority to about 12. The poll was to be declared at Greytown yesterday at noon. The Greytown brass band had volunteered their services on the occasion of Mr Bunny's election, and we understand it was to be a regular Fete day.
The returns furnished us are as follows 5 — Bunny. Pearce. Grey town ... 4<7 6 Cartevton ... 19 11 Featherston 27 1 Masterton . <t 28 97 40 Majority for Mr Bunny, 51.
