TARANAKI.

Oub files from Taranaki, are to the 7th inst.

A petition which we shall afterwards re-pub-lish has been forwarded by the Taranaki settiers to the Assembly. It bears reference to their claims for losses sustained by the war of 1860-61.

Tbe following extracts are from the News of the sth inst:—

Native Raid. — During the week in spite of the vigilance of the force at the Block-bouse at the Hua, the natives have succeeded in driving away from Hoby's farm at Bell Block, some 200 sbeep the property of Mr Dorset and others, and they are now at Mataitawa. Wnile tbe present mob remain at that place it is very clear that there is no safety for properly in tbe Bel district, and there are now many valuable buildings and a Urge amount of stock there. After what bas passed there need be little delicacy in dealing with these marauders, and a salutary blow that might rid the district of them might also be efficacious in other quarters. Fatal Accident.— On Tuesday one of the Otago volunteers, — Sheridan, met his death by falling headlong into the stream which runs through Mr Secombe's brewery and into the Huatoki by a culvert under Oarrington road at Mr Brooking's mill. He was found in this culvert, his head much cut by his fall on the stones in the stream and it is supposed tbat in a senseless condition he was washed into tbe culvert and so drowned. We have not beard the particulars ol the coroners's inquiry, but understand a verdict of" Accidental death "was returned.

Ska Gull.— The wreck of this unfortunate craft, now lying on the beach near the Henui lately changed hands for £150, the intention being to get her lo sea again il possible, but, we understand that on examination she has been found too much damaged to justify the attempt aud it bas been resolved to break her up.
