Tho brigantine Heron, Laing, from Wanganui with cattle bound for Otago, put in here on Sunday from stress of weather and want of fodder. She left Wanganui on Wednesday last, but in consequence of the strong wind, waß driven as far North as Cape Egmont She will again sail when provided with supplies, She lost 5 out of 45 head of cattle. The brig Valiant, arrived in this harbour on Sunday night. She left Lyttelton at 4 p.m., on Saturday, had a Btroug southerly breeze with much rain and a high Bea during the passage. Captain Dove reports that he saw a brig, supposed to be the Tyra, about 10 miles off tho land, making for Lyttelton as he was leaving. The Valiant took a cargo of 64 head of cattle on her downward trip. The s.s. Lady Bird sailed from Wellington, at 4 p.m., on the 12th inst, ; had a fresh gale from N.W., first part of the passage; latterly, moderate breeze from the Westward, arrivodat Lyttelton, at 10 a.m., on tho 13th, left again at 5 p.m., same day, experienced a heavy head sea part of the passage and light variable winds throughout, arrived at Dunedin, at 5 p.m. on tho 14th, left again at 5 p.m., on the 16th, had light head winds and smooth water, and arrived at Lyttelton, at 3 p.m., on the 17th, left thevo at noon on tho 18th, experienced variable winds and thick rainy weather during the passage and arrived here at the wharf at 7 a.m. on the 19th. The brig Gazello, was sighted about 25 miles off Port Cooper on the afternoon of the 18th. Captain Eenner reports tho Aldinga from Melbourne on the 10th, arrived at Dunedin on the lGth, without the English mail. The Claud Hamilton, which left N apier on the 13th, arrived at Lyttelton on the 15th, at 20 minutes past 1 p.m. ; sailed again the same day, at 4 30 p.m. for Otago. The Claud Hamilton had not arrived at Otago when the Lady Bird left on the ICtU. The Colonial Defence force were being rapidly drilled by Major Whitmore, at Napier, and tad inspired condence amongst the settlers. No native news. »
