THE NEW INTERCOLONIAL TARIFF.
As many political speakers have lately expressed a desire to see the action of the proposed Intercolonial Tariff, extended to New Zealand, we publish the details, though we believe that the mercantile community generally does not coincide with these gentlemen in their opinion of the necessity or advisability of our being parties to any uniform tariff that may be agreed upon in Australia. The new tariff is aa follows :— Imported^ Spirits .. .. 10s a gallon Wine {in wood) .. .. 2s do Wine (in bottle) . , ... .. ,4s, per dozen Beer (in wood) .. .. 6d per gallon Beer (in bottle) . . . . Is doz quarts Beer (in bottle) .. 6d doz pints Malt .. ..,...< 6d bushel Hops 3d pound Tobacco (manufactured) , ; 2s pound Do (unmanufactured) . . Is pound Sheepwash . . . . . . 3d pound Cigars and Snuff . . . . 4s pound Tea . . Cd pound Refined sugars 7s owt Unrefined .. .*.■ i. 5s 6d do Molasses and treacle . . . . 3s fid do Coffee .. .... .. 3d poundj Dried fruits, nuts, almonds . . 10s cwt > Chicory, cocoa, chocolate .. 3d pound Opium, (manufactured) . . 20s pound Opium (unmanufactured) . . lOa'pound Rice .4s cwt Candles Id pound All oils.. 6d gallon Salt .. 40s ton On this subject the Argus says :— -This list! contains two imposts which will not be likely to; . receive the sanction of the Victorian publio-r-the addition of 2a per cwt on rice, bringijfig the, charge to M per ton ; and the new duty, of JE2 pet ton on salt.
