THE PATENT SLIP.
On Wednesday evening the Select Committee brought up the following Report on this sub ject. It hai not yet gone into Committee of Supply. There seems, however, so general a desire to have tho undertaking carded out that we have no doubt about its being cordially agreed to.
Your Committee having read certain letters which had been laid before the Council determined to report a« follows : — Ist. That a Patent Slip will be more suited to the circumstances of this Port than a floating dock. 2nd. That from the data before the Committee it appears probable that the cost of the erection of a Patent Slip with engine, engine house, &c, sufficient for the requirements of the Port will be about ,616,000. . 3rd. That it is practicable to erect such a slip in this harbor, and desirable to be done without
any unnecessary delay. The Committee add that the information obtained by the Government and laid before the Council is as futl and complete as it could be under the circumstances ; and the committee only regret that they had not the opportunity to hear the evidence of a gentleman of considerable experience in similar workß, now in Otago, to whom, as they Are informed, a request had been sent to visit Wellington and advise upon the subject, but who has not yet replied to the letter of the Superintendent. The Committee, however, recommend that-.the Government should be urged to 10-e no time-in arranging for the construction of a slip capable of taking up ships of 1,260 tons register in such place as may be found most convenient, as near as po»slble to the land already reclaimed. • ■ J. Woodwabd, Chairman. Provincial Counoil Chamber, May 18, 1863.
