COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS.
I The length to which our report of Council proceedings extends prevents it inser tion in our present issue. We have however, kept our readers fully^possessed of the gist of what has taken place, and the subject which occupied nearly the whole time of the House on Thursday night, is fully alluded to in our leader on " railways" to-day. On the came I night, the only other business transacted was us follows, viz.: — A resolution that the unpublished reports by the hon. J. C. Crawford, of his survey of the province, be printed, was passed unanimously. The two following resolutions referring to Grants in Aid were also passed. Ist. That all grants in aid of local contributions for construction and improvement of roads, 1 and similar works, be in the proportion of twice the amount raised in the district for the intended work or works. 2nd. That the special grants shall only be isBued when it shall be shown that a rate has been levied upon the lands in the district to which a grant has been made, and the proceeds of which rate on some portion thereof has been paid into the Provincial Treasury. On (be question of grants to teachers, the following resolutions were passed without a division : That in the opinion of this Council it is desirable that the proportion of public money to be contributed towards the salaries of teachers of common schools, be regulated according to the following seale 1 . 1. In aid of salaries amounting to, but not exceeding £100, one moiety of the whole amount. 2. laaid of salaries exceeding £100, the contribution to be one moiety of iglOO and one fourth of "the balance, providing always that the contribution in no case shall exceed £75.
