HOWBOII, formerly of the San Francis-ec a Minstrels, are to be membersof tho New Company, . and as there are several others in our midst of well earned dramatic repute, there is no doubt but thai a first rate one can be formed. Miss St Clair is . last from the Princess Theatre Dunedin, her forte . islight comedy, and the Otago press speaks highlji , of her abilities as a performer in that way. Escape oy a Prisoner*. — About 19 a.m. on Tuesday last, Wiliam Weston, alias Richard Thomas Shields, a convict under sentence of penal servitude for eight and a half years, effected his escape from the gang. The "prisoner was eraploj ed in levelling the new cricket ground at Te Aro, and under pretence of tightening the head of tho pick with which he was at work, he removed it from the handle, the officers attention being at that moment drawn^to the other prisoners, Shields seized the opportunity, aud suddenly darted up a gully close at hand, taking the handle of the pick with him, and though immediately pursued, succeeded in getting clear away. He is about 5 feet 6 J inches high, fair complexiou, dark brown hair and whiskers, diamond, J A., and two dots on the left arm, rive dots on the right arm in the form of a diamond ; at the time of his escape, he was dressed in the prison clothing, the ' whole of which is branded, broad arrow, W. Q. 6. Since writing the above, we have received information, that dnring the night of Tuesday, the shed on the new cticket ground, in which the Government tools are kept was broken open, and the following articles stolen : — one old brown overcoat, one speckled jumper, one billhook, and one measuring tape ; another coat was torn to pieces. There is no doubt whatever, that these articles, have been stolen by the escaped convict, Shields, as they will materially assist him in carrying out his intention of getting clear of the town. Every exertion is being made to ensure his capture. Qcekn's Wakehuose.— This building is now officially notified as being ready for the storage of goods.
