COMMUTATION OF THE SENTEHOE OP DEATH. The Priace Alfred has brought intelligence that the application made on behalf of the convict Fratson have been successful. Mr Wilson, who it will be recollected exerted himself in getting up a petition to the Governor, has received the following reply : — 11 Colonial Secretary's Ottce. "Auckland, 22nd Nov. 18d2. . 1 ' Sib, — I have the honor by the direction nf Mr Domett, to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of tha 4th inst, stating that you had forwarded • through his Honor the Superintendent of the Pro- . vince of Otago, a petition from the professional, i mercantile, and trading community at Dunedin, , praying his Excellency the Governor to commute , the sentence of death, passed on John Frataon, at I the last Sittings of the Supreme Court at Dunedin. In reply, I am to inform you that his Excellency ', has been pleased upon the recommendation of his Honor Mr Justice Gresson, to commute that senf tence to penal servitude for life. 3 I have the honor to be, Sir, 3 Your obedient servant, s W.
