Acceptable Showers.— Very unexpectedly, a refreshing shower fell on Tuesday afternoon, and again in tbe evening. The country is now much in want of rain, and a good soaker would be very acceptable. . Custom's Revenue.-— The Customs Revenue for the Jast month amounted to £3,911 Is 46, being a much larger amount than has been Received lor seven or eight months past, and £650 more tban the corrtsponding month of last year.
1 The late Mn John Mitchkll.— Ws noI ticed a long line of followers at a funeral on Tuesday, and on enquiring found, that an old settler was being carried to his narrow home — Mr John Mitchell, the father of the numerous family of that name, generally kuown as " the Mitchell's of Polhill's gully." Although coufined to his own premises for some years past, the late Mr Mitchell was known to very many of the settlers, a large number of whom testified their respect to him and his numerous sons on Tuesday, as above mentioned. We believe the family arrived herein the Gertrude, in October, 1841. The Nkxx Homeward Mail. — We have been iuformed that the next mail for England will be made up and despatched from Wellington a dny earlier than usual, viz, on Fri day the 12th, instead of Saturday the 13th, as stated in tire time table. The mail will, we presume, be dispatched proportionately earlier from Otago, so as to ensure its arriving in Mel-j bourue in good time. This change in the day of departure will be regarded with favor ereiy. where ; as in the attempt to avail itself ofthe very latest day, New Zealand has three times been thrown a month back in itstiorrespoiidenee reaching England. Fancy Bazaar. —We understand that the Fancy Bazaar which has been so long in prepai ration in aid of the New Wesleyan Sunday I School, will be held in the Odd Fellows' Hall on the 6tb and 7ih of Januaiy next. The j initiated say that it will be superior to any thing of the kind heretofore attempted in Wellington, which we can well believe from the activity with which its promoters have been laying their fiiends under contribution. Horticultural Exhibition. — It has been decided to bold a second Horticultural Exhibition on the first Thursday in Mirch. A? notwithstanding all the prognostications to the contrary, the first one met wilh such decided success. We doubt not that the one now contemplated will meet wiih a similar favor. g— " i
