WANGANUI RACES.
As had boon anticipated from the small number of horses in training for the Races this year, they were not of so interesting a character aa usual, and did not draw the usual attendance to the race-course. The people from the country did not come to town in such largo numbers aa has been customary, the weather not being favourable ; there was much less of stir and bustle from incomers than has ordinarily marked our annual holidays. The following is an account of the races. FIBST DA7. 1. Maiden Plate of £ added to a subscription of 5 guineas each, for all 4 year olds foalod in the Colony. Weights, 9 st. 71bs. one event, two miles. [ There were twelve horse 3 entered for these stakes, but only one came to the post — namely, Major Trafford's bay filly, unnamed, 4 years, Walker. Walked over. 2. Stook-horse Race of £ added to a sweepstake of £1 each, for Stock horses ,fiona fide the property of Stoek-ownera in the districts of Wanganui and Rangitikei, that have been regularly ridden after stock, for at least 12 months before the date of entrance, and that are not entered for any race of the present meeting Weights same as tor Wanganui Stakes, post entrances, single event, two miles. Mr. Walker's ncg Tani-o'-Shanter, aged Walker I Mr. Darnell's c g Duodecimo, aged Owner 2 Major Cooper's b g Balaam, aged Day S dist Won easily by Tam-o'-Shanter. 3. Garrison Plate of £ open to all horses bonajide the property of, and to be ridden by officers on full pay, or officers in the Volunteer and Militia Companies', in New Zealand. Distance and Weights same as for Wanganui Stakes. Lieut. Powell's c g Fox, aged Wicksteed 1 I Lieut. Clayton's c g Diehard, aged Powell 2 2 Fox had his own way of this race. 4. Puoduce Plate. There >yas no Prodnco race, the only horse entered by Major Trafforii having been withdrawn, and the produces stakes to the general fund. This day's sports concluded with a hack race for a saddle — won by Mr. Handloy's Robin, SECOND DAY. 1. Hurdle Race of £ , added to a sweepstakes of £2 2s. each, P. P. 3 yrs. 9st., 4 yrs. lOst., 5 yrs. lOst. 71b., 6 yrs. and aged lOst. lOlb. Heats 2 miles, over 6 hurdles 4ft. high. Second horse to save his stakes. The winner of the Produce to cany 4lb. extra. Mr. Baldwin's b g Volunteer, aged Day I I Lt. Powell's c g Fox, aged Hair 3 2 Lt. Clayton's c g Diehard Pawson 2 3 Mr. Handley's b m Miss Wallace, 8 yrs Owner 4 4 This was the best contested race of the meeting, all the horses taking their leaps well. . 2. Wanoanui Stakes of £ , added to a sweepstakes of £3 3s. each, open to all horses. 3 yrs old 9st., 4 yrs old lOst., 5 yrs lOst. 71b., 6 yrs old and aged lOst. lOlb. Winneis and thoroughbred horses to carry 41b extra. Heats two miles, second horae to save his stakes. Mr Foreman's c g Whynot, 6 yrs Day I Mr Baldwin's ncg Tam-o'-Shanter, agod Walker 2 Whynot won easily. 3. Licensed Victuallers' Purse of £ added to a sweepstakes of ills. each, P. P. catch weights, two mile heats. Mr Foreman's eg Whynot, 6 yra Day I I Mr Walker's ncg Littlejohn, aged Walker 2 2 Dr Tomlinson's g g Rations, aged Lind 0 0 Littlojohn contested this race well with Whynotv Rations bolted off tho course and was not placed. 4. Consolation Stakes of £ , entrance £1 Is. each, for all horses that have run and not won a race during this meeting. Post entrances, weights to be handicapped by tho stewards, single event, once round the course and a distance. Mr Walker's ncg Littlejohn Walker I Lt.
