SYDNEY. From the Herald," .August 16. Business has been exceedingly dull during the week, and the transactions in most articles, with the exception of teas and sugars, have been so small that there is scarcely any alteration to re port. The news by the mail steamer Northain, contained in our telegrams, has not yet affected prices, but no doubt, whon letters come to hand, there will be some stir in articles of daily consumption, which for the present can only be nominally quoted. We subjoin the latest report of our markets : — Flour, — The market is steady and without any alteration ; the sales have only been limited, and not sufficient to test the market: Adelaide is quoted at £14 103. to £i 5 10s. per ton : tlio millers' quotations continue at £14 per ton for fine flour. Wheat, ss. 9d. to 6a 3d per bushel. Liquids— Ale in bulk is pretty firm; first brands are worth from £8 to £8 ss. per hogshead. Porter in bulk is rather more inquired for, and Taylor's is quoted Bt £6 15s to .£7 Ch. Bottled ale and porter are iti moderate demand at from 9s. 6d. to 10s 6d. Brandy is hardly so firm. Martell'a is quoted at las 9d to '13s; Hennesy's, 12a 6d, and at this price sales have been made. Bum ia very dull, and hag given, way Id to 2d per gal ; 80 o.p. is quoted at 3s 8d to 3s 9d : 10 o.p. is very difficult of sale and prices quite nominal. Geneva is also lower in consequence of late arrivals. JDKZ and key brandy aie worth from J3s t> 14s Whisky is steady and worth 5s (id. In wines a large sale was held at auction on Wednesday. Sherries brought 5a 7d to 12s; port 7s yd. to 12a. Teas are firm. Good congous range from £Q to £d per chest. A few fine teas are, however held for £\0 per chest. Green teas are scarce, and command full rates. , Sugars are in rather better demand. At auction the cargo of the Java sugars ex Mary Agnes were sold at the following rates : — Light counters, £34 17s. 6d to £38 ; yellow, £33 10s to £U ss : dark .£3l ss. Coffee is not so firm, owing to shipment being shortly expected to arrive. Manila is quoted at B £d:to 9d per lb in bond. Candles are very dull of sale. Belmont's and Novas are nominally quoted at 14d, Rice is firm, and Patna commands from £25 10s to £26 per ton ; Java rico was sold at auction at £18 10s to .£l9 5s per ton. Saltia dull. • Liverpool, £4 to £i 5s per ton. Fine salt is without any alteration. Rock salt is lower, A Bale of 80 tons, to be delivered at the ship's sid© and all expenses paid by the buyer
has been made at j£3 10s per ton. Sales of small lots have also been made at i' 4 per ton. Oilmen's Stores are not much enquired for, and stocks are heavy. Tobacco. — There has beou very little doing in tobacco this week ; prices aro therefore nominal. Negrohead is qnoted at sa. Gd., to 6s. 6d. ; cavendish, -3s. 6d. to 4s. It is expected that the news by the mail will give another spurt to ■> this article as soon as there is a better demand for consumption. Cigars are dull of sale; Cormdo* and Havamlah shapes are quoted at 655. ... Retail Markets.— Friday. Wheat and Flour. — The mills quote fine flour at £14; and second quality of £12 per ton of 200(5 lbs. Wheat is worth ss. 9d. per bushelt Bran is Is. ii. per bushel Jiiscuit. — Mr. Wilkie quotes cabin biscuit a: 20. and navy at 15a. per 100 lbs. Mr. Hamilton, ship 15s. and cabin 20s. per 100 lbs. Bread — id. per 2 lb. loaf. Vegetables— Potatoes 6s. to Bs. ; onions 409. to ?>os. per cwt.
