LATER FROM OTAGO.

By the Lord Woisley, we have received Otago papers up to the 21st inst. The following is extracted from the Daily Times, THE ESCORT. The Escort brought down on Thursday 16th Jan. 11,472 ozs. 15 dwts. of gold, of which 8867 ozs. 5 dwts. was from Tuapeka and 2612 ozs. 10 dwts. from Waitahuna. The total quautity of gold taken away yesterday per Aldinga was 14,839 ozs. 3 dwts. 8 grs. Land at Hawkesbury sold yesterday at the Government sale at prices varying from 85s, to 235. per acre, the average being 38s. per acre. The total quantity sold was 1788 acres, which realised £3363 os. 3d. Land sold at the Molyueux on Weduesday Jsth Jan. at the rate of nearly £65 per acre, Thirty-seven sections were sold, realising £601. The highest price given for a section was £28 10., and the lowest £13, His Honor yesterday (20th Jau.)raade some severe remarks ou the conduct of the prisouers concerned in the death ot Kinnark, who was killed in a fight. It was shown in evidence that there was no foul play, and that the deceased was the challenger. The oballenged, Shannon, declined to fight until he was threatened with having his tent pulled down ; be then consented to meet his antagonist. The fight took place in the presence of a large number of people, each of the combatants having a second of his own. The deceased was the larger man of the two, but met his death by a blow on the forehead. Shannon, who dealt the blow, was sentenced to 12 mouths imprisonment and the seconds received three months each.

Captain Steuart, of the late ill-fated steamer Oscar, came from Southland in a small schooner, just in time to take his passage by the Aldinga for Melbourne. We exceedingly regret to learn that he met with an accideut whilst at Inveroargill, by which his arm was broken.

The total number of persons arrriving in Dunedin by sea from the Ist to the 20th was 3844 and the total number of departures 1131; showing an excess of arrivals over departures of 2710 souls.
