WELLINGTON BUILDING SOCIETY, No. 2.

The Fifth Annual Meeting of the Members of the above Society was held at their New Office, Odd Fellows' Buildings, on Thursday, 11th April, Mr. Toamath in the Chair. The following 1 Report of the Committee, and a balance sheet, were unanimously adopted:— Fifth Annual Report of the Committee of the Wellington Building Society No. 2. In reporting 1 the progress that has been made in the fifth year of the Society, the most important event therein, and the one that has had the greatest effect upon the proceedings of this Society, has been the termination of the Wellington Building Society at the end of September last. Partly in anticipation of this cireum stance, those Rules were framed to legulate advances by way of mortgage, which were submitted to the members at the last annual meeting, and when the time drew near, several applications, (as had been expected) were made to your Committee, from persons whose property was undor mortgage to the former Suciety, and who had no other means of meeting 1 the claims that were made upon then." The usual care was taken to ascertain the value of tin* securities offered, and eventually advances to the amount of £1,8(i4 were made, by which the claims of the Wellington Building Society were paid off, and that Society w.ts enabled to close its accounts without having recourse to harsh proceedings in any case, — a result in which your Committee felt a fraternal and sympathetic pleasure. The following is a synopsis of the operation of the year that has just closed — 16 Shares have been realized, at a cost to the Society of 1,339 11 0 ISi do. do. withdrawn do. do. 532 12 0 10 realized Shares have been cancelled, the Society receiving ... 3;37 5 0 14 new Shares have been created. The Society has also Advanced by way of : mortgage in terms of Class 1 2,040 5 0 ! Do. do. do. Class 2 2,529 12 9 Total of Mortgages 4,569 17 9 While the amount of Deposits received is 563 3 10 And do. do. repaid 24 11 3 1 The present position of the Society is as follows — Number of unrealised Shares now current 210J Do. realized dr. do. 303 Total 513£ of which 22 Shares are hypothecated to the Society as against £2,200 of the amount advanced on mortgage, the repayment of which i» thus provided for. The amount of advances on mortgage has also been reduced by the sum of £75 2s. by the repayment of 5 per cent per annum in the cases in which shares are not hypothecated. The statement of assets and liabilities shows a nomiual balance due to the Society of £15,624 14s, — to which if there be added the contributions on 21 0£ unrealised shares for five years (£6,307 10s.), and the interest on mortgages for the same term (10 per cent, on £4,403 Us. lid., or £2,246 17s. 6d.), there will appear prospectively a total amount of £23,179 Is. 6d. as at the credit of the Society at the end of its term, irrespective of accruing interest on subscriptions, &c, as paid in and invested from month to month, giving a sum of £110 ss. to each unrealised Share at the end of the tenth year, aud as the interest just referred to (minus expenses) will give a further sum of about £2 10a. per share, it may reasonably be . anticipated that the guaranteed £100 for each share will be realised within the legal term of the Society. As the applications for advances have rather exceeded the amount that was in hand the Committee believe that they have studied the interests of the Shareholders by anticipating their receipts, — a course which they have been enabled to pursue by being allowed to overdraw their account at the Union Bank in the sum of £448 6d. The Committee have only to add that Mr. W. P, Pickering has been appointed Manager, and will enter on his duties as soon as practicable after the commencement of the ensuing year of the Society, ; Wellington, Edward Toomath, April 10th, 1861. Chairman. Messrs. G. Allen and D. Kinniburgh were re-elected, and Messrs. Bishop and Moss were also returned as members of Committee. The following resolutions were then put and carried — " That a vote of thanks be given to the Auditors (Messrs. R. Lambert, G. P. Clapham, and J. Knowles) for their services during the past year. " That the thanks of this Society be given to Mr. J. Woodward for having gratuitously performed the onerous and responsible duties off acting Manager during the past fifteen months." The meeting was then adjourned. The Committee direct the following extract from their minutes to be added, in consequence of Mr. Toomalh having resigned his seat on the Committee, it was unanimously n solved — 11 That the cordial thanks of this Committee bo given to Mr. Toomath for the able assistance afforded by him as Chairman from the commencement and during the existence of this Society, on his retirement from that responsible position."
