WAIRARAPA ELECTION.
On Thursday, the 14th inst., the nomination of Candidates to represent this District in the Provincial Council, took place at the School House, Grey Town. Tbe business was com* inenced at noon, by the Returning Officer, B. A. Ferard, Esq., reading the writ ; after which he requested the electors to nominate two fit and proper persons to represent them. Mr. H. Jackson then proposed C. R. Carter, Esq., which was seconded by Mr. Thomas Kempton, seu. Mr. Udy, sen., proposed Capt. Smith, and Mr. Blade seconded the proposition.
Mr. T. Kempton, seu., proposed Mr. H. Jackson, and Mr. Jones seconded the nomination.
Mr. H. Conner proposed Mr. J. Masters, which was seconded by Mr. Jone3.
There being no other Candidates proposed, Mr. Carter came forward and addressed the meeting at considerable length ; explaining his conduct as their member in the last Council, aud refuting the inaccuracies and fallacies put forward by Mr. Masters and his political friends, wbo had done so much harm to the Province. Mr. Carter appeared ta give geneial satisfaction to the electors preseDt.
Oapt. W. M. Smith then addressed the meeting-, explaining why there had been nothing done in tbe Council ; and in leply to a question asked by Mr. Masters, stated he was favorable to the system of selling land on credit, provided il was tried on a small scale as an experiment; the same opinion haviug been expressed by Mr. Carter.
Mr. H. Jackson, who was a supporter of Mr. Carter's, stated that he was not in favor of selling land on credit ; but wished to see run holding rights extinguished iv the neighbourhood of townships.
Mr. Masters, iv his usual style, addressed the electors at considerable length, propounding Wakefield nostrums, now happily for the pro vincej at a discount.
The shew of hands was then taken, which being declared in favor of Messrs. Carter and Smith, Mr. H. Jackson demanded a poll; when Mr. Masters stepped forward, stating that as he saw he had no chance of success, he Avould retire ; but shortly afterwards he changed his mind, and stood. The meeting then separated.
The polling took place on Monday last, and the following is the final state of the poll at Greytown and Masterton: —
Election, District or Wellington Country. — The nomination of Representatives for this Distiict in the Provincial Council, takes place at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Wellington, to-morrow, at noon ; and the poll, if necessary, will be taken on Thursday, the 28th March.
