'L he- English Treaty of Peace waa signed within the very walls of Pekin, on the 241h November, and the French treaty was to be signed on the following day. The Chinese-were to pay 8,000,000 taels ( a tael is valued at five shillings each), in all about £2,600,000. The town of Tien-tsin is to be in future the consular port, and that part of Canton which is opposite to Hongkong, and occil* pied now by us, is to be oeeded permanently to the English. Of course our Ambassador has a right of residence in the Imperial city if he wishes to go there* but it is supposed that he will not trouble the inhabitants with his presence, as long as his business cau bo conducted at the more convenient and equally interesting city of Tien-tsing, which in Chinese language means the Heavenly spot. The remaius of the four murdered pri* soners— Mr Bowlby, De Mormann, Lieut. Anderson, and Private Phipps— were buried iv the Russian Cemetery outside the walls of Pekin on the 17th of October* Mr. H. B. Loch, and Major Hanson have proceeded to England— the foraie? in charge of the ratified treaty aud convention; the latter with despatches from Sir Homo Grant. A sum of 300,000 taels has been exacted from the Chinese authorities by the British for the friends of the deceased, and as oornpenSatbn to the survivors for their sufferings!
