LOCAL INTELLIGENCE

We published in our last an account of the deposits in the Wellington Savings ' Bank, during the first quarter of its existence. Considering the unsettled state of the times, the large amount deposited is highly satisfactory, and is proof sufficient that the inhabitants are fully sensible of the benefits resulting from the institution. We may reasonably anticipate an increased number of depositors so soon as the present disturbances are put down, and the settlers enabled to resume those peaceful avocations which the inroads of the hostile natives under. Rangihaeata have prevented.

By a private letter, received from a gentleman who w«nt home in-'the-Cale*. donia, and who has been in communication with the authorities at the Horse Guards, we learn .that,the- remainder of the 65th regiment is to be sent out direct to this colony, to be followed by another, supposed to be the 24th regiment.

On Friday night last, an alarm was raised in Karori that some natives were prowling about the district. About 12 o'clock, one of the sentries at the stockade, observed three dark forms creeping across the clearing to the right-of his po° sition. He challenged, and receiving no reply, fired. The three persons then jumped over some logs, and disappeared in the bush. The settlers immediately turned out, and were hurrying with their families to the block-house. Mr. Woodward, Congregational Minister, who happened to be near the spot, went with two or three men and examined the ground, and though nothing was seen of the persons, the mark of a naked foot was dis r tinctly visible.

From Porirua we learn that nothing of importance has occurred* The united fprces were busily employed cutting roads up' to Rangihaeata's pah, " Gibraltar," and felling the bush. The only practicable approach to the pah, on the front side, is by a narrow; ravine, along which only one or two men can advance at a time ; and a considerable detour will have to be made through a very difficult country, to get at it in the rear. Two howitzers had been conveyed, with extreme labour, to the camp, and eighty shells thrown into the pah with no perceptible result. We are informed that the rebels have dug warres seven feet underground, and have otherwise prepared for a determined 'resistance.

There was a report in town on Saturday that a body of natives, from Manawatu, intended Coming down to assist Rangihaeata. v

His Excellency Ca.pt/Grey had sailed in H.M.S. Castor, -38, 'Capt. Graham from Porirua for Waikanae, where it W as intended to land two hundred-seamen and marines to cut <iff the reireat 6f»tho rebels up the coast providedJßiangihneatia evao Ufu ted "hispreseiit position, aud also for il )e purpose of eheckinn the M anawatui natives should they come the coa<t road.

A detachment of 50 of the town friiliifo under the commandof Lieutenants Ross and Levin, wore ordered to the IJ uu, on Sunday, or *the*purpD3eof occupying 'tire stockade at the Taitu.

We are indebted 'to the New IZealan'der for the accountoiUhe.journey of Liem Wilmot, 11. A, and Captain Nugent,sßrh' from this place to "Auckland, through tho interior of the country.
