To the Editor of the "Wellington Independent."
Sin, —Though living kome distance from Town' I managed to attend the meeting l:t lyh«ld in the Britannia Saloon,- and there lienrdjiiuch of th,: im minent danger iri which the sfttlf-ment is placed a* the present time: Since then, through the ex rnon. of M ssrs. K. Bethune, J. H. Wallace, J. Wnde. R. Davis, Dr. Minteith, rind others, a strong volunteer corps liiis been former! at Te Afo. . But I per ceii-e that several persons, the leadi-rs of the peopie, do not tv- n out in a morning to guanl the town' Why lathi.? Do they not like th- bill.-t, or am I to under»t«nr] that tht-ir fears were assumed to carry their object,?' As a subcriber. I should wish you to publish the n*mes of those who shirk from the necessary duty of guarding the settlement. If those parties do not turn out, and join with their fellow-setilers, they may depend upon it that in the time of need, they will receive no assistance from those who are disgusted with their present skulking. I am, &c, Clodhopper.
On>e upon a time one Newspaper said to another Newspaper—" How fair we be? Our forehead-is adorned wiih the crescen', —the symbol of eastern magnißccnce,—and the whole of our robes are imprinted with the hieroglyphirJs of truth, —while thy forehead h surmounted by the serpent, the emblem of evil, and thy gnrments are emothered over by the imaginings of ihe evil eye.'' " These,'* observed the other Newspaper, " are hard sayings, and would ap pea> to be w<>r:hy of all acceptance,—but, are we not brothers ?—are we not bot'» striving to purge the world of error? The serpent on my forehVad is riot the emblem of evil, but of wisdom, and the etata of my garments is an indication of industry ; for upon them will be found recorded the efforts of the diligent striving to rise from obscurity,- and the labours of many ing against the idol qoldj which thoii ignorantly worshippest." 44 But brother," answered the crescent. " for brothers we doubtless are, how oanst th«u consistently accuse me of worshipping the idol gold, when all my efforts are concentrated towards annihilating the POWERS THAT BE !" Here the serpent very wisely made answer that "to be powers," and "wished to be powers." were somewhat similar to " EMPOWERED," and "BY THE POWERS," and tlms the colloquy ended.
