MADAGASCAR.-DEFEAT OF THE FRENCH AND ENGLISH TROOPS.
In consequence of repented indignities offered to the resident British and French merchants, the commanders of the French corvette "Lb Berceau " and " Le Zelee," and the English vessel "Conway, ' alter vainly eudeavou.mg to treat, agreed to laud their forces and seize upon the Forts ; the vessels i.i the- meantime commanding 220 French and 80 English, safely elected a landing, but on approaching the Forts, a battery which they had not previously perceived, opened a destructive fire upon ihem. They performed prodigies of valour, but were ultimately obliged to retioat to their vessels. It is computed the French lost—Killed in the action 19, including officers, and had lorty-two wounded ; the English suffered in the same proportion.
