R, M. COWERN WINS CLUB CUP

RESULTS OF MATCHES NEXT SATURDAY’S GAMES The feature of last Saturday’s play on the Waihi Golf Club’s links was the fine round by R. M. Cowern in the seventh round of the club cup competition. His score, 73-8, 65, was the best of the day and earned him five cup points. These brought Cowern’s aggregate to 13 points and he has become the 1949 winner of the coveted trophy. His success was well deserved. He has been steadily reducing his handicap during the season and has played consistently good golf throughout. R. W. King, 86-20, 66, was in second place and scored three .points. He came home in 40, a good effort for a player on a 20 handicap. Others to score well were A. R. Cleary, 74-7, 67; H. F. Malyon, 79-12, 67; F. E. Hunt, 80-13, 67; A. F. Lowrie, 89-22, 67; J. Barron, 76-8, 68; F. L. Franklin, 87-19, 68; R. Quinlan, 85-16, 69; D. Haszard, 84-15, 69; and J. Mannix, 86-16, 70. Handicap reductions were as follows: R. W. King reduced 1 to handicap 19; R. M. Cowern down 1 to handicap 7; A. F. Lowrie down 1 to handicap 21. Match Results Matches were played in several of the club competitions and resulted as follows: —

Four Ball, Best Ball: Wotherspoon and Merrington beat Seath and Dillimore, 2 up; Ellery and Pennell beat Dean and Cowern, 5 and 3; Mannix and A. Taylor beat A. W. Clark and R. D. Taylor, 5 and 3; Franklin and Wright versus Barron and M. Haszard, all square. In the replay Barron and Haszard won 7 and 6. Two championship games were played. In the intermediate, C. N. Dulhie beat O. J. Morgan, 4 and 2. Junior: A. F. Lowrie beat R. W. King, 5 and 4. Senior Plate: D. Merrington beat R. M. Cowern,'s and 4. Intermediate Plate: R. M. Cullen W. J. Henderson, 3 and 2; R. E, Rowe beat F. L. Franklin, 1 up; D. Haszard beat R. Quinlan,. 1 up; F. E. Hunt beat R- A. Dibble, 6 and 4.

President’s Qualifying Round Next Saturday, August 27, the qualifying round for the president’s trophy will be played <jver 18 holes. The best 16 net scores will qualify to play off on handicap match play. Competitors who fail to qualify but return cards will be grouped into flights of eight for match play on handicap. Except where drawn to play matches members may choose partners for this event. Club competitions to be decided on Saturday are as follows: —

Senior Handicap Semi-final: J. Barron v. C. E. Hollis, M. F. Haszard v. F. E. Hunt.

Junior Handicap Semi-final: W. R. Steel v. F. L. Franklin. Intermediate Championship: E. C. Dunstan v. D. Seath. Junior Championship: R. D. Taylor v. R. J. Spiers. Intermediate Plate: R. M. Cullen v. H. E. Rowe.

Junior Plat© Final: R. Blackwood v. F. Wright. The committeemen in charge for the day will be Messrs A. F. Lowrie and W. J. Henderson.
