ACADEMY AND MINER’S THEATRES
WEEK-END PROGRAMMES
“Pastor Hall,” now screening at the Academy, is purely entertainment. It is fact presented as fiction; it presents the human problems of today. The locale is the little peaceful village of Altdorf (Germany) fathered by a benevolent pastor who rules the flock with kindness. When he publicly protests against the rapidly growing Nazi terrorism, he is thrown into a concentration camp. He finally escapes and rather than individual freedom prefers to strive for the freedom of all, by making one last appeal to a frightened little congregation on the Sabbath morning though death awaits him. The acting is excellent, with Wilfrid Lawson in the title role.
Fiction’s most fascinating rogue. Michael Lanyard, returns to the Academy Theatre screen to-morrow in “The Lone Wolf Keeps a Date," a sparkling Columbia melodrama. Warren William, who played the title role in the past, succeeds in making the screen’s suavest scamp come to life more skilfully than ever, as he gaily pursues his life of adventure and romance. His romantic foil in this latest hit of the popular series is Frances Robinson, lovely young Columbia starlet. Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, and Smiley Burnette are featured in the supporting picture, “Colorado Sunset.” The plot revolves round a “milk war” in which Autry and his Texas Troubadours become involved when the buy a ranch and discover that they have also contracted to deliver milk to the local depot.
“Danger Flight,” fourth of the “Tailspin Tommy” series starring John Trent, Milburn Slone and Marjorie Reynolds, comes to the MinersTheatre to-morrow. The film deals with a fight between airmen and racketeers for the rights to a commercial airline. Youngsters play a big part in this picture which stresses the importance of educating youth to become air-minded by the use of model planes.
